Manufacturing Careers and Student Opportunities
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” At some point in time, we’ve all been asked this question. Students over the past decade or so may have been told, “you have to go to college to get a good job.” Well, we’re here to tell you this is simply not the case.
In recent years as a manufacturer based in Hanover, PA, ELSNER has realized the need for a promotion of skilled workforce and manufacturing careers in the community. From programs at local high schools to Apprenticeships, we have partnered with community leaders to promote initiatives that help young people learn about alternative avenues for enriching, high paying careers that don’t require a four-year degree. We recognize that pursuing a path towards a 4-year college degree is a great path for some. However, what about those students who prefer to work with their hands, who have a mechanical aptitude, who like to create and build essential products that support millions of people all over the world? We want them to know that they have options, including some that result in little to no student debt!
Why Manufacturing, Why ELSNER?
The manufacturing industry is one of the largest and most influential sectors of the American economy. With record numbers of Baby Boomers retiring, there is a real need in the economy to facilitate a transfer of knowledge from seasoned workers to younger ones. Manufacturing careers foster growth, push the boundaries of innovation, and offer stability, and at ELSNER, we have all of that and more!
With over 87 years in business, ELSNER is no stranger to stability or a seasoned workforce. With employees like Jeff, a machinist and Pete, a welder who each have 44 years of tenure, there is a lot of skill and knowledge just waiting to be shared. In fact, check out this video featuring Pete where he talks about welding at ELSNER and Jack Slonaker, a student who went from pre-apprentice to apprentice here at ELSNER.
Ultimately, our goal is to provide hands-on, learning opportunities to influence the next generation of workers, so they understand the value in seeking an exciting career in manufacturing at ELSNER and our community at large. Check out some of the ways that students can get involved and try out a career in manufacturing at ELSNER:

Tours
We’re proud of the work we do in our clean, temperature-controlled environment, and we love to show it off! Students of all ages have come for field trips and school tours to learn how ELSNER machines that produce everything from sanitizing wipes to surgical drapes are made. Don’t worry, we always put safety the safety of students and our employees first…proper PPE is a must!
Job Shadow
Many schools offer classes in trades such as machining, welding, and mechatronics. What better way to see what you’re learning in school be brought to life in the “real world” than to spend a few hours or a full day shadowing someone who has mastered the art?
Pre-apprenticeship
In partnership with the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, ELSNER and other local manufacturers created a first of its kind, pre-apprenticeship program certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. This program allows students to register as an official pre-apprentice and receive hands-on learning during their school day in the areas of machining, welding, or mechatronics. It’s a paid opportunity too!

Apprenticeship
Upon graduation, students can apply for a full-time apprenticeship, completing either a four-year machining program or two-year welding program with the goal of continued employment at ELSNER. Apprenticeship programs offer on-the-job training, accompanying schooling paid for by ELSNER, full-time paid employment, and countless opportunities for advancement. Just think…you can get paid to learn and not have any student debt!
